Easter Thursday

You killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead.

Acts 3:11-26; Ps 8:2ab, 5. 6-7. 8-9.; Luke 24:35-48

We are in today's reading from Acts, following on from yesterday's healing. Peter now explains how this healing happened - through the power of Jesus. Now - speaking to the Jews - he explains that although they were directly responsible for his crucifixion, this was only that the prophesies could be fulfilled. Jesus most definitely wants them to repent, and to equally enjoy the full rewards of the new covenant in his flesh and blood. Their sins will be forgiven and they shall enjoy the fullness of life everlasting.

Yesterday's and todays Gospel from Luke, tell the (almost too well known) story of the Road to Emmaus. In that too, Jesus uses and explains the prophesies and teachings of the Jewish scriptures, and how they are all fulfilled in himself. And by doing so, reveals himself to the disciples who had allowed themselves to be dragged down into dismay by the crucifixion.

Some Christians, well meaning no doubt, express the view that as we now have the New Testament, we can ignore the Old. Jesus and His apostles, teach us how wrong that is! God, Christ and the Holy Spirit are revealed through the entirety of the Bible. The Old Testament, over and over again, prefigures the New. This is known as Typology.

If you like a well argued intellectual debate, then the recent edition of Dimbleby's "In Our Time - Typology" will be of interest.
