There is salvation in no one else.

The Sadducees were a segment of Jewish faith that had no belief in the afterlife. So to them, those preaching of Jesus, Dead (very publicly!) and now arisen, was a very dangerous movement. They may have been afraid for their lives, but certainly for their position at the top of society, and so were determined to quash this movement. And backed up by the rulers of the temple, they had the means to do so. As Fr David pointed out in his Easter Homily, they did have the power of life and death over the apostles.
Yet, the apostles stood in the most public forum and made their testimony of belief in Jesus so publicly. Jesus is the only name through which we can gain salvation! Which by the bye is a pun, because the Aramaic name 'Jesus' means 'salvation'. Peter was almost literally putting his head on the block.
I like to think that I might be that brave - but am not at all sure that I would be!
