The Gospel of Matthew 22 November 2025 at Sacred Hearts

John Huntriss joins us again for an in depth look at the Gospel of Matthew. John brings extensive experience of formation of Deacons to his presentation about the life and times of St Matthew and his events are always well received. John has a small volume called 'The Diary of God'  published by the Diocese of Clifton which takes us on a week by week journey through the bible following the churches three year liturgical cycle. Copies will be available for sale cash only, at £5:00 each on the day.

Clergy attending will be catered for the cost being funded by their CPD budget. Other attendees are very welcome to join in with the catering at a cost of £1o each, payable in cash on the door. Please note that this must be pre booked - otherwise there will not be enough! Please select the required ticket from the options available.

John Huntriss: The Gospel of Luke

John Huntriss, a well known scripture scholar, and Author of "The Diary of God: a guided tour of the Bible following the Liturgical cycle of daily May readings" is visiting Cheltenham again, to talk to an audience of Permanent Deacons about the Gospel of Luke. Others are very welcome to join this interesting day. The day starts with Mass in St Gregory the Great at 10:00, and will finish at about 15:30 Deacon Eric Holliday will also be introducing the new Lectionary.

Please note that a buffet is provided at a cost of £10pp, please ensure that you book a ticket for this (you will pay on the day) to ensure that sufficient buffet is provided.

John will have copies of his excellent book for sale at £5 ea. Bishop Declan wrote in the foreword "St Jerome wrote that 'ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ'. I welcome this book as a means of deepening our appreciation of the scriptures."

He is a non-stipendiary minister and a Councillor on Charlton Kings Village Council.  He has recently completed an MA dissertation on the significance of E L Mascall (1905-1933), a leading theologian and priest in the Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Church of England.  He will introduce us to the life and work of Rev Mascall and speak on the subject of his dissertation:

John Huntriss, Talk on Scripture

The Diary of God - 14th December 2023

We welcome John Huntriss as guest speaker. John is a well known and respected speaker on Scripture, who has recently published "The Diary of God". This book guides us through the entire bible over the three year cycle of the Liturgy of daily Mass, and is recommended by our Bishop who wrote the forward. John will be selling copies after the talk (£5:00, cash only).

This event forms part of our RCIA Journey in Faith program, and like all of these events is open to all of the Parish: all are very welcome to come!

We have a new Deacon

By the grace of God, John Andrews was ordained into the Permanent Diaconate on 23rd September at Clifton Cathedral. A coach of Parishioners went and others travelling by rail and road to the celebration of ordination of 5 Deacons at 11:00.

After Sunday morning masses, Parishioners joined in a celebration buffet.

Please pray for all five candidates for ordination as they enter their ministry following 5 years of formation: John Andrews, Andrew Bent, Charles Hickman, Bartek Kowalewski and Joe Almeida.

John thanks all for their prayers and support on his journey.

Stations of Creation

As part of this years Season of Creation – a Catholic and Ecumenical season in which we consider our environment – we repeated the stations of creation which took place two years ago.

The walk was interspersed with prayers about creation. and was inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’

Why did Jesus die? Lent Talks by John Huntriss

Wednesday 29th talk

John Huntriss leads three Scripture based Lenten sessions at St Gregory the Great, Cheltenham. John has been leading Scripture sessions around the diocese for many years and is a superb scriptural scholar and communicator.

Why did Jesus Die? – a familiar story, John will put the pieces together to tell the Passion/Easter story. He will also look at the details we hear read each year but may have never stopped to consider. A good preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

The Wednesday evening sessions at St Gregory the Great, Cheltenham, take place on 15, 22 & 29 March. Each session starts at 7pm.
