Monday of week 21 in Ordinary Time

You turned to God from idols, to wait for his Son whom he raised from the dead.

The first letter to the Thessalonians is one of many written by the apostles to the growing communities of believers in the good news in 1st Century Palestine. No doubt there were many more letters written than we have surviving copies, and most of the ones we have were written or attributed to Paul. They are masterful examples of pastoral care. The recipients were persecuted for their faith - the letters are overflowing with encouragement and courtesy. As a result they are very 'readable' to modern ears. They certainly repay many times over the small effort required to pick one of them up and read it through.

If you do - read it as addressed to you personally. Take the advice, and be reassured by the love evident in the writing from Paul.
