Wednesday of the 7th week of Eastertide

‘I commend you to God, who is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance.’

Acts 20:28-38; Ps 68(67):29-30. 33-35a. 35b-36c; John 17:11b-19

One of the Joys of modern life is that it is entirely possible to visit places mentioned in the bible. I have been to Ephesus, and stood on a stone platform that Paul might have preached from. Others I know have been at Mass celebrated in Mary's house there...

Photos of these places are easy to find and it may often be useful to find them when reading of Pauls' journeys. In todays reading from Acts, Paul quotes Jesus ("It is better to give than to receive") - but you will not find the quotation in any of the four Gospels. It is well worth remembering that Jesus must have spoken to thousands of people about hundreds of things in his life, and we only have a few words here and there of what he actually said. Paul uses them to explain why he must leave this new christian community and continue his travels.

The Christian community at Ephesus continues to this day.
