Saint Josaphat, Bishop, Martyr

Titus 2:1-8,11-14; Psalm 36(37):3-4,18,23,27,29; Luke 17:7-10

One of the open sores in the church is the lack of unity between Eastern and Roman Rite Catholics. We should be together, but are (using a few, seemingly unimportant things) holding each other apart.

St Josaphat was an Eastern Rite monk and Priest who worked hard to bring the East and Rome back together - but failed and was even martyred for his efforts. He was beaten to death by a mob, who had been stirred up by aristocrats who expected that union with Rome would reduce their income from benefices in their control.

Or - as ever - people got in the way of God's work - as we do tend to do!

Today we pray earnestly for an end to conflict between the Eastern and Roman Rite, and ask for the intercession of St Josaphat.
