Give Alms, and behold, everything is clean for you.
The Pharisees had numerous rules about washing, eating, everything about day to day living. So many rules that it was probably impossible to be perfect - but then we knew that about ourselves anyhow.
Jesus put things the other way around. Give up the internal grievances that rigid observation of rules tends to lead to, and remember that God who made the outside, also made what is in your hearts? If we unburden ourselves of rigidity, and scrupulous behaviour, we release the person God created from unnecessary burdens.
