Tuesday of week 11

Saint Botolph (7th century)

The first reading today, from Pauls 2nd letter to the Corinthians, highlights the need for those of us with means, to support others. In His day, Much of the Church was being persecuted, and needed support to keep going. There was no social support fund in Roman society.

On Sunday I met with visitors to our Parish from Nicaragua. Their priests are not allowed to earn income from their priestly work - they are entirely dependent on support secretly given by parishioners. The church as a whole is suppressed but nevertheless faith is flourishing. Nicaragua is not by any means unique - many other Christian churches are persecuted in this day and age.

Let us try to make our aid (for example through Aid to the Church in Need) match their needs.
