As they were looking on, he was lifted up.
Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47(46):2-3. 6-7. 8-9.; Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19-23; Luke 24:46-53
The Gospel today, from the end of Luke's Gospel, is, we need to remember, written by the same person who wrote the account of the resurrection given at the beginning of Acts. The author wrote these two documents as one continuous account, split in two volumes. As the second volume was anticipated, it became unnecessary perhaps to include all the details in the first. The style of the first leads us to expect more - "I am sending the promise of my Father upon you". And indeed, the revelation of truth has continued and continues today. The style of the second introduces some elements of theology and explanation: the timing of the end times is not to be known, and the time from now till then will be full of the Holy Spirit to sustain us.
We are to be reassured from reading the letter to the Hebrews which expands upon the promise made by Jesus, that he will come again to collect all the faithful and to bring us all into the everlasting presence of God - a presence full of joy and worship, because of the Love of God.
