The stoning of Stephen the first Christian Martyr, is a terrifying story - we are well protected in our country, but for many christians, a life ending like Stephen's is all to possible. The fathers of the church have paired the stoning [Acts 7:51] with the start of Jesus's extended sermon from John's Gospel on the bread of life [John 6:30-35]. It is reassuring to know that "whoever eats of this bread, and drinks of this cup, shall have everlasting life".
