To one whose way is blameless, I will show the salvation of God.
Isaiah 1:10, 16-20; Ps 50(49):8-9. 16b-17. 21, 23; Matthew 23:1-1
Jesus is very hard in today's Gospel on those who tie up others in laws and obligations, and make a show of observance themselves, without actually doing the most important thing: Love God and Love your Neighbour.
He was not the first to speak truth to power in this way - Isiah and other prophets spoke up in their time about this. The passage from Isiah today balances Jesus' harsh words with a reminder that if we do turn from sinful ways, then salvation is promised to us.
