Sirach 6:5-17; Ps 119(118):12, 16. 18, 27. 34-35; Mark 10:1-12
As we approach spring, couples everywhere are making plans to be married. Todays reading would be a very apt but also a very unusual choice for a wedding liturgy! It tells us how in Moses' law, it was possible for married men to divorce their wives (it is not at all clear if the right in mosaic law extended to the women, although in his catechesis to the apostles, Jesus does suggest that either might seek divorce). But why?
Because of their hardness of hearts.
The frailty of the human condition is met with a compassionate and loving response. Jesus reminds us that God's plan for humankind is a mutual, giving and loving relationship between a man and a woman, intended to be permanent. Gods love for each of those involved does not end if they find it impossible to remain together.
Let us pray today for everyone planning to be married, that they make a full and open commitment to each other, and to any children that come into their married life, and that by God's grace they may remain together for all time. And let us pray for the necessary compassion and fellowship we need to be prepared to offer if for whatever reason this is not possible.
