Thursday of Week 6

Genesis 9:1-13; Ps 102(101):16-18. 19-21. 29, 22-23; Mark 8:27-33

Peter answered him, ‘You are the Christ.’
And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
The 'Messianic Secret' is quite striking in Mark's Gospel - Jesus did not want people to be told about him as the Messiah. Perhaps this is because Jesus wants us to come to know and trust him by our contact with him, not by following some human evangelist? Or perhaps Mark presents Jesus in this way so that the healings, parables etc. which point to Jesus being the Messiah, are eclipsed by his messianic work, achieved only by his passion, death and resurrection. In Mark, Jesus only reveals himself as The Messiah, and as The king, at his Trial in front of Pontius Pilate (who was not a Jew).
