Tuesday of week 4 in Ordinary Time

Hebrews 12:1-4; Ps 22(21):26b-27. 28, 30. 31-32; Mark 5:21-43

The liturgists who complied the season of readings have gifted us the opportunity to spend a week or two reading the Letter to the Hebrews at this time. We are now arching the end of this challenging letter. It would certainly be unkind to suggest that the author of Hebrews was not a good greek scholar, as the arguments tend to be a bit rambling and contorted, even though some of the turns of phrase are Wonderfull and have entered our common language (cloud of witnesses" and "lay aside your burden". If you can get below the difficulty of reading and discover the beauty of the message however, it can be most rewarding.

From the very beginning of the letter, the author relates everything back to the Old Testament. Indeed so much so that you should if you can read it in a study bible (with cross references to the source texts) so that you can follow up on what they said. Jesus has fulfilled the OT, and what was revealed 'bit by bit' [Heb 1:2] and ' in many ways to our ancestors' was always the truth, and always will be. Everything points to Our Lord, and now he has come, lived and died for and with us, and has risen as he said he would.

Think back to your own past, and can you see how God has revealed himself to you 'bit by bit' using 'many guises' ?
