Hebrews 5:1-10; Ps 110(109):1. 2. 3. 4; Mark 2:18-22
Fasting is an ancient tradition - going well back before Christ's time. And Jesus also embraced it - so is there a disconnect in todays Gospel, in which Jesus seems to say do not fast, because I am with you now?
If you take all the messages on fasting to heart then you will see that Jesus is clear - we do need to fast, in order to separate ourselves from whatever is getting between us and God. So do not fast to mortify yourself - fast to make space in your day to let the word of God speak in your heart.
You could either take a short fast e.g. for the hour before Mass, or try a breakfast - nothing - supper sort of day. Actually - a lot of people do that anyway because of the demands of work! But in that case, you need to fast of something else - turn the radio off for a morning, have an evening without TV - whatever you need to do, to make that space for God to speak.
