Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs

Ecclesiastes 1:2-11; Psalm 89(90):3-6,12-14,17; Luke 9:7-9

They are included in the cannon of the Mass (1st Eucharistic Prayer) and their cult was widespread and very popular as early as the 5th century AD. However, there is nothing at all certain known about them, as many different and conflicting legends were attached to them from pagan and other sources. They definitely did exist, so perhaps we can consider them to be 'unknown soldiers' in the early and often bloody life of the church.

As such they represent a large body of people who gave all, including their lives, because they trusted in the Lord, and knew that He loved them. They will most certainly be praying for us in heaven today, and we should be thankful for their sacrifice.
