1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Psalm 32(33):12-13,18-21; Matthew 25:14-30
It is I think well known that a Talent was a huge amount of value in its time - an entire Roman Province would pay less in taxes in a year. Mathew is using the skill of hyperbole to make a point.
Is the 'wailing and gnashing of teeth' also an example of hyperbole? Will the returning saviour - king really throw out those who are unable to make money for gain [that tainted thing!] into the wilderness for perpetual doom?
Move from both hyperbolic images and we might find a single focal point. God has given us tools to make use of - the talents could well have their modern meaning, and we should do all we can with what we know, the skills we have, to make better the kingdom for God.
