Jeremiah 17:5-10; Psalm 1:1-4,6; Luke 16:19-31
Todays Gospel is a stark warning to not be consumed by our wealth. The rich man barely notices the beggar Lazarus even though he probably stepped over him every time he came in and out of his home. They each enter into their just reward! And even then, the rich man is still only concerned with his own well being.
It is not the rich man's death that is the problem - it is his self absorption. That is what we need to look out for, and could be about anything really - things, a lifestyle, our job. Those who look out for others are like Abraham in this Gospel - looking for a way to help that poor rich man over the abyss that is keeping him from heaven, but finding no way to do so.
