St Lucy was widely respected from the earliest of times in the christian community. She was a role model of innocence and faithfulness, exemplifying the kind of 'little child' that our Lord calls unto himself. She was martyred in the persecutions of Diocletian in 304 AD and her name is on of those included in the Roman canon (the liturgical prayer most often used at Masses for a solemnity) amongst the names of the early popes, (Sixtus, Cornelius etc).
