Ezekiel 24:15-24; Deuteronomy 32:18-21; Matthew 19:16-22
The Feast of the Assumption is celebrated in Ireland today- England Wales and Scotland having transferred this to the nearest Sunday. An excuse - perhaps a feeble one - to continue celebrating this most wonderful feast!
In todays Gospel Jesus reminds us that whatever we treasure in our hearts, is what we shall find in heaven. The lesson is about the unimportance of earthly things. We each of us will tend to treasure something on Earth - perhaps a car, or artwork, or a celebrity or a sporting team - but do we really want to spend our entire future with only them? In any case they would be worthless to us in our future spirit lives!
Mary, we are told, after the birth of her son “treasured these things in her heart” [Luke 2:29]. These things were the Lord - Our God, and the prise of Him given by the Angles and the Shepherds. Mary shows us that Our Lord is the one we should treasure in our hearts above all else, then we can find ourselves in heaven in the presence of Our Lord and Mary and all the saints.
