Ecclesiasticus 48.1-4,9-11; Ps 79; Matthew 17.10-13
‘Come and show us your face’ this liturgy implores. The face of God evokes fear [cf Exodus 20.19; 33.20] but for those who turn towards Him in humility the face of God is the face of mercy. The prophets who have spoken in God’s name have done so because of their deep communion with that face and their attentiveness to its voice. [cf I Kings 19.1-13] Even in their proclamation of judgement they have sought to draw us nearer to that mercy.
